Tiwanuku designs

Hello,

In the past few months I’ve looked at South American weaving patterns, some of them pretty old. They’ve given me ideas and helped me to make a range of new designs that I’m calling TIWANUKU until another name comes along.

You’ll notice these designs have barely any curves, which is because weaving is done in straight lines. I’ve found I like drawing using straight lines. In the small, introvered place I find myself when I draw, this simple discovery feels like a development. Often change is too gradual to notice but the straight line thing has been obvious.

Have a look. You’ll see they are made like jigsaws, on cardboard squares. There are a few reasons for this, and the main one is I like cutting things into pieces and reassembling them.

When they are reassembled as patterns I’ll remove the joins between the squares, as I have done with this dinosaur golf pattern. And look at the thumbnail for this blog post as well - that will show you how they look without the joins.

OK David
